January 26, 2003 - Notes on Vince Russo's plans for Raven in NWA/TNA
  • Notes on Vince Russo's plans for Raven in NWA/TNA - Vince Russo was the guest on The Pain Clinic on Hot Talk 1280 WHTK also available on feelthepain.com:

For those who aren't aware, Vince Russo is the head writer for Total Nonstop Action and is the on-screen figurehead for Sports Entertainment Xtreme [S.E.X.] -- the group Raven joined on NWA/TNA this past week on PPV on January 22. 2003 after leaving WWE on Monday.

Here's what Russo had to say about Raven:

The Pain Clinic asks Russo about Raven and Justin in an email from ShatteredSoul. Russo replies:

    Quote:
"I mean you know again ... were open to anything, anyone and anybody and it just boggles my mind I mean, I mean given the opportunity, I mean I knew Raven when he was Johnny Polo and Scotty Flamingo and all that But it just boggles my mind how the "creative geniuses" cannot find something for a guy like Raven to do and cannot figure out a way to get a Raven over. I mean thats what I mean about the politics in this business you know the guy never got a fair shake because of whatever political b.s. was going on behind the scenes because this is a guy that is one of the 5 smartest guys in the wrestling business that I have ever met and the fact that they didnt know what to do with him is a disgrace to the writing team as far as I'm concerned and I'm thrilled that he's with us and he WILL be a main character. I mean, I can think of things for Raven to do from now to Kingdom Come."

  • January 24, 2003 - News/Notes on Raven in NWA/TNA & WWE, Raven to wrestle for USA Pro.
  • Raven to wrestle for USA Pro Wrestling in March - Raven will be working the next three scheduled USA Pro Wrestling events promoted by Frank Goodman in New York.

Raven debuts for the promotion on 3/8 at the Elks Lodge in Queens, which as irony has it, was the same building he made his ECW return in at the promotion's first TNN taping for angle where he and Tommy Dreamer captured the ECW World Tag Team championships from The Dudley Boyz.

USA Pro sent out the following press release on Raven's appearances:

NEW YORK TO EXPERIENCE THE RAVEN EFFECT ALL OVER AGAIN FORMER WWE, WCW, AND ECW SUPERSTAR, RAVEN, TO JOIN USA PRO WRESTLING

FRIDAY, JANUARY 24TH, 2003 - After having the fans demand it, USA Pro Wrestling President, Frank Goodman, has spent the better part of the last few days working on a deal to bring former WWE, WCW, and ECW Superstar, Raven, to his promotion. Goodman is one to give the fans what they want. The fans don’t have to wait any longer because the deal is done. Raven has agreed to wrestle on USA Pro Wrestling’s next three shows, starting on March 8th at the Elks Lodge.

Raven, who debuted as Scotty the Body, began his wrestling career in 1988 in the NWA Pacific Northwest territory. Boy has he come a long way since then. In 1992, Raven, then Scotty Flamingo, joined WCW and won the WCW World Light-Heavyweight title. A short time later, Levy signed with the WWF and became Johnny Polo, a rich kid persona type gimmick. He first managed Adam Bomb (Bryan Clark), and then the Quebecers (Jacques Rougeau Jr. & Karl Ouelette). Finally, Raven went solo an developed an anti-social grunge gimmick. He joined ECW in mid-1995, where he won the Tag Team Titles with Stevie Richards. Raven won his first ECW World title when he defeated the Sandman on January 27, 1996, in Philadelphia. He went on to drop a "loser leaves town" match to Tommy Dreamer at WrestlePalooza 1997. Later that year, he was spotted sitting front row at WCW Nitro.

He went on to form The Flock which include guys like Billy Kidman, Perry Saturn, and Stevie Richards. After 2 years in the company, Raven decided it was time to go. Eric Bischoff, in a meeting before the August 23, 1999 "Nitro" in Las Vegas, offered anyone on the WCW roster a limited release if they were unhappy. Raven stood up, and walked out of the meeting. Raven signed a one-year contract with ECW on August 25, 1999, and teamed with Dreamer to win the ECW World Tag Team title at the ECW on TNN television tapings on August 26th. Raven once again won the tag team titles, this time with Mike Awesome, in 2000. Later that year, on June 23, 2000, Raven met with WWF officials to discuss a possible move back to the World Wrestling Federation.

Raven re-debuted in the WWF (now WWE) alongside Tazz. Raven went on to capture the WWE Hardcore Championship on a number of occasions. In April of last year, Raven became a color commentator on MTV's "Sunday Night Heat." That lead to a feud with D’Lo Brown. Raven then went on to be a part of the Raw brand until he lost a "loser leaves Raw" match to Tommy Dreamer. This was the second time that Dreamer caused Raven to leave a company or show. Raven then decided to build his "masterpiece" on Heat. Raven wanted to get back to Raw. On a Sunday Night Heat, he beat Dreamer in a match which reinstated him on Raw. With a new look and haircut, Raven wrestled Jeff Hardy in a match on Raw to determine the final Raw member of the Royal Rumble 2003. Raven was defeated by Jeff Hardy. Not only did he not make the Royal Rumble, but 2 days later, on January 15, 2003, Raven was released by WWE without much of a reason.

Now, with all of that being in the past, Raven has set his sights on a new company. Raven has decided to come to USA Pro Wrestling. What exactly was Raven’s "masterpiece"? Will we see it in USA Pro Wrestling? Who will Raven look to take his frustrations out on? And of course, with a new haircut and look, is Raven looking for a new belt to put around his waist? All of these questions and more might just be answered at USA Pro Wrestling’s upcoming shows. See below for a list of the shows Raven is scheduled to appear on. USA Pro Wrestling President Frank Goodman has said, "We hope that this move makes all the USA Pro fans happy and we look forward to seeing you on March 8th!"

  • Raven mentioned on NWA/TNA - Jeremy Borash, in his "Notes from the Inside" column on NWATNA.com, spoke about Raven's debut in NWA/TNA and plans for his character:

"I was very excited to see Raven come to TNA for a myriad of reasons. I have shared a few Waffle House stops and the occasional matinee movie with Raven in Atlanta when I lived there, and had a chance to really hear his ideas on the business. He is an incredibly intelligent person, and a remarkable talent. I believe if things go as planned, his star will shine brighter in TNA than anywhere else before in his career. "

  • Notes on Raven's release from WWE - Raven was released early from his 3 year contract with World Wrestling Entertainment [WWE] on January 20. 2003. Reportedly, the release came about after a storyline Raven had proposed to WWE Creative had already been approved, situating Raven as a "John Doe" styled character from the film "SE7EN." This also was the impetus for Raven adopting a more clean cut look from his previous braided and skirted nu-metal appearance, in an effort to more cloesly emulate the ascetic look of Kevin Spacey's on-screen "John Doe" - thus the reason why Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler strongly pushed Raven's shift in appearance in the match commentary against Jeff Hardy on 1/13/03. Sources speaking to SCOTTLEVY.COM have intimated that the situation between Raven and WWE has been frosty for some time following Raven's leaving of his color commentator role on the HEAT program on MTV earlier in 2002. Raven's vocal umbrage at the double standards inherent in the company following the dismissal of fellow ECW alumnus Justin Credible could be seen as the breaking point between the two parties, which allowed Raven his immediate release from the company.
